After close loss, I/G blows past GC

A late surge came up short in the team’s season opener last week Tuesday, but the Independence/Gilmanton girls basketball squad took control early in a lopsided win on Thursday.

The Indees trailed by double digits at halftime of their season opener in Whitehall last week Tuesday before making a late surge to get within two. They had the ball with a chance to tie the game late, but couldn’t get the final shot off in time, losing 44-42 (see story elsewhere in Sports). I/G got off to a faster start on Thursday, outscoring Glenwood City nearly two-to-one in the first half as they went on to win 65-33.

At 1-1 on the season, the Indees were set to go to Boyceville on Tuesday of this week. They’ll host Alma/Pepin in Gilmanton this coming Tuesday before playing at Cochrane-Fountain City next Thursday.

I/G 65 GC 33

A 23-2 run put the Indees in control in the first half.

The Hilltoppers had an 8-4 advantage before the Indees scored 23 of the next 25 points to take a big lead. The run started with a three pointer by Adison Pronschinske before Nora Schank scored while being fouled on I/G’s next possession to put I/G ahead for good.

Makiyah Scow added a basket then Kassidi Dejno scored before Scow got another basket off of a steal, making the score 15-8 with 11 minutes left in the first half.

After a GC basket and an I/G free throw, Nora Schank got a steal and took the ball back for a layup. The Indees went ahead by double digits on a basket by Dejno with about eight minutes left. Dejno scored again off of a steal to make the score 23-10. Schank added a basket a possession later than Scow scored off of a steal, putting the Indees ahead 27-10.

The teams were even for the rest of the half as the Indees took a 33-16 lead into halftime.

I/G maintained control throughout the second half, extending the lead and winning by 33.

Scow and Schank both scored 13 points to lead the Indees. It was a balanced attack as six different players had at least five points and 11 players scored for I/G in the game.
