Four injured in car, buggy crash

Four occupants of a horse drawn buggy were hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries after the buggy was rear-ended in the town of Pigeon Sunday evening.

The buggy — occupied by Edna Wengerd, 41, Fannie Wengerd, 43, Lizzie Wengerd, 33, and William Wengerd, 39, all of Whitehall — was driving on Highway 53-121 near Waldera Ln. before being rear-ended by a vehicle driven by Elisha Reetz, 37, of Black River Falls, according to a press release issued by the Trempealeau County Sheriff’s Department.

The release said the crash caused substantial damage to both the vehicle and the buggy. All four occupants in the buggy were transferred to a local hospital. Reetz, who was the lone occupant in her vehicle, was not injured.

Inattentive driving is believed to be a factor in the crash, according to the sheriff’s department.

Assisting the sheriff’s department were the Whitehall Police Department, Pigeon Falls and Whitehall fire departments, Tri-County Ambulance and Mayo 2 helicopter.

The accident is still under investigation.
