Arcadia boys third at home race Saturday, county girls run strong

The Arcadia High School cross country team welcomed opponents to its annual Holte Invitational race on Saturday, a day that ended with the Arcadia boys finishing inside the top three scores.
The race was the final tune-up for all county teams ahead of their final conference runs this week.
Arcadia’s girls team finished eighth, while nearby Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau finished seventh in both the boys and girls races. Other county teams also ran at the event, with Blair-Taylor placing sixth in the boys run and Independence-Gilmanton taking fifth on the girls’ side.
Arcadia and G-E-T have the Coulee Conference championship race back in Arcadia this Saturday, while Blair-Taylor will join the Indees and Whitehall at the Dairyland Conference title run this Thursday at Augusta High School.
Monroy, Raiders lead county boys
Andy Monroy had the best day of any county runner as the Arcadia junior placed ninth in the boys race with a time of 17 minutes, 24.7 seconds.
Aquinas’ Jonathan Skemp was the leader for much of Saturday’s run and finished the race in first place, too—Skemp’s winning time of 16:31.2 was 23 seconds clear of teammate Declan Gregg in second place (16:54.2).
Monroy wasn’t the lone Raider in the top cluster of runners, as Arcadia senior Peyton Nelson ran fast enough to finish 11th and was followed quickly by teammates Nestor Badillo in 13th and Cole Lockington in 17th.
All seven of the Raiders’ varsity runners finished in the top 35 times.
Blair-Taylor and G-E-T were the other Trempealeau County teams that ran in the boys’ event Saturday, and each team had multiple runners in the top 50—Jacob Olson, a junior, paced the Wildcats with his 27th place finish and was joined by teammates Ryan Flynn (36th) and Thomas Brandt (38th) in the top 50.
Liam Caya was G-E-T’s fastest runner with a 33rd-place day, and the Red Hawks had a nice cluster of runners to round out the top 50. Cavin Spitzmacher took 40th, Ayden Aschenbrener ran to 48th and Carson Mayer finished 49th. Quinn O’Neill was right behind them in 53rd.
I/G’s Sylla paces county girls
A Dairyland Conference runner was crowned the individual champion at the Holte girls’ run this year.
Cochrane-Fountain City sophomore Addy Duellman ran a brisk 5,000-meter run in 19:03.1, good for first, and Coulee Conference leader West Salem took the team title on Saturday.
Duellman wasn’t the only area runner to impress on Saturday—Indendence/Gilmanton sophomore Taylor Sylla ran to fifth place to lead all area runners, and the Indees had three runners inside the top 25 times.
The Indees saw Gracie Rombalski (18th) and Sophia Kampa (19th) stick together in the front group of the race, and G-E-T’s best day was just behind the Indee pair as junior Anya Wolfe took 20th for the Red Hawks in 23:17.9.
Kelsey Lien ran to 34th to lead Blair-Taylor, which also saw freshman Jadrean Borreson take 35th, Emmalee Johnson take 45th and Ella Halverson finish 57th.
The Red Hawks had a cluster of runners to round out the top 50 as G-E-T got all seven runners to finish in the top 58 times.
Arcadia sophomore Linsy Cruz led the hosts with a 56th-place day, and the Raiders’ second best finish came from Marianna Garcia’s 60th-place run.

second at Chileda Classic

The Arcadia boys cross country team had four of the top seven finishers as it took second in the Chileda Classic last week Monday.
That typically would be enough to win a meet, but the first three finishers all ran for La Crosse Aquinas.
After the three Aquinas runners, Nestor Badillo, Cole Lockington, Peyton Nelson and Andy Monroy finished consecutively for Arcadia. Ivan Aguilar was the team’s fifth runner, taking 14th overall. Juan Hernandez was the team’s sixth runner and Yahir Gonzalez was the seventh, they finished 25th and 33rd.
Independence/Gilmanton runner Taylor Sylla was the runner-up in the girls race, finishing behind defending state champion Addy Duellman of Cochrane-Fountain City.
The Indees finished fourth in the team standings as Gracie Rombalski was 13th, Sophia Kampa, 22nd; Leah Sylla, 27th; Angie Martinez, 41st and Hannah Gierok, 55th.
The Arcadia girls finished seventh, led by Linsy Cruz, who was 47th individually. Marianna Garcia finished 61st followed by Kathryn Amundson, 56th; Nayeli Reyes, 61st; Rae Schaffner, 63rd and Andy Pronschinske, 64th.
Blair-Taylor had three runners compete led by freshman Jandrean Borreson, who was 26th. Kelsey Lien finished 28th and Ella Halverson was 50th.
The B-T boys finished sixth, led by Jacob Olson, who finished 20th individually. Thomas Brandt was 34th; Riley Gunderson, 55th; Wyatt Schrock, 59th; Armoni Samples, 51st and Jerick Cornejo, 64th.
