Arcadia ends season with loss to Somerset in playoff opener
The Arcadia baseball team’s 2025 season ended after the Raiders went one and done in this year’s playoffs.
No. 12 seed Arcadia (10-16) could not keep pace with the fifth-seeded Somerset Spartans (15-7) in their WIAA Division Two regional quarterfinal clash this past Thursday in Somerset, where the Spartans picked up a 12-2 victory in five innings.
The Raiders found themselves in a deep hole early, as Somerset scored three runs in the bottom of the first and four more in the second to seize a commanding 7-0 lead. Max Sobotta’s RBI single in the top of the third and Max Blaschko scoring on a wild pitch in the fourth briefly cut the deficit to 7-2.
However, the Spartans kept the pressure on with two runs in the bottom of the fourth and then three final runs in the fifth to bring the mercy rule into effect.
Sobotta, Deklyn Grzadzielewski, Login Scow and Carter Wegman all scattered singles for the Raiders in the loss. Grzadzielewski also drew a pair of walks.
Aquinas 10 Arcadia 1
In their final regular season contest before the start of the playoffs, the Raiders suffered a blowout loss to the Aquinas Blugolds (19-3) last Tuesday in Arcadia.
After Aquinas jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the third, Arcadia got one run back in the bottom half of the inning on Ben Lightfoot’s RBI double. Eventually, the Blugolds pulled away for good with rallies of four and three runs in the fifth and sixth innings, respectively.
In addition to the Lightfoot double, Arcadia also got singles by Austin Fernholz, Max Sobotta, Caleb Pronschinske and Jonah Slaby.
