Arcadia splits Westby games, fall to Mondovi

The Arcadia baseball team got their week started on a positive note with an extra-inning road win over Westby in conference play. However, things went wayward for the Raiders is their next two games, as they suffered lopsided losses at the hands of Mondovi and then Westby in their rematch.

The Raiders (4-4, 2-2 Coulee) will play their next three games at the friendly confines of Parker Hagg Field, hosting Black River Falls on Thursday, Viroqua on Monday and Independence/Gilmanton on Tuesday. The trio of games are scheduled to start at 5 p.m.

Arcadia 2 Westby 1

Clutch hits with two outs gave the Raiders just enough run production to escape Westby with a win last Monday.

The two teams battled through six scoreless innings in a pitcher’s duel between Arcadia’s Login Scow and Westby’s Devin Nedland before finally each getting on the board in the seventh.

In the top of the inning, Scow hit a leadoff single and later advanced to second on a sac bunt. With two outs, Carson Wozney lined a single to center to drive in Scow and hand the Raiders a 1-0 lead. The Norsemen responded in the bottom of the seventh with Everett Hoven’s RBI single to knot the score at 1-1 and force extra innings.

Scow came up clutch to help his own cause in the top of the eighth, lining a single to left that drove in Deklyn Grzadzielewski for the 2-1 advantage. Scow then slammed the door, allowing just a two-out single to Nedland in the bottom of the eighth to lock up the victory.

Scow was superb in his eight innings of work, allowing just one run on six hits and a walk while striking out four. He and Ben Lightfoot also each had two hits.

Mondovi 11 Arcadia 1

Already leading, the host Buffaloes (6-1) unloaded for six runs in the bottom of the sixth to finish off a mercy-rule win against Arcadia last Tuesday in Mondovi.

A Scow sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth leveled the score at 1-1 briefly, only for Mondovi to tag the Raiders for four runs in the bottom of the inning. The Buffaloes then unleashed their game-sealing rally in the sixth inning to send Arcadia back home with a non-conference loss.

The Raider offense was held to only three scattered singles in the defeat.

Westby 9 Arcadia 1

Unlike their meeting earlier in the week, the Raiders were unable to keep the Westby bats quiet in the rematch as the Norsemen (7-2, 1-1 Coulee) rolled to a conference win last Thursday in Arcadia.

The Raiders were already down 9-0 when they finally got on the board in the bottom of the sixth with Grzadzielewski’s sacrifice fly that brought home Max Sobotta. In fact, Sobotta’s one-out triple that inning broke up Westby pitcher Beckett Brueggen’s bid for a no-hitter.
