County sheriff hopes to aid Louisiana officers

The Trempealeau County Sheriff’s Office has joined a statewide effort to “adopt” one of the many Louisiana sheriff’s employees who suffered personal losses during hurricane Ida.

“While many of these sheriff’s employees were out assisting others during the storm,” Sheriff Brett Semingson said, “they themselves lost everything back at home.”

The effort is under the auspices of the Badger State Sheriff’s Association, Semingson said. The goal is for each of the state’s 72 sheriffs to raise $833.33 for a total of $60,000 from the entire state. That amount could aid six Louisiana sheriff employees.

“Of course,” Semingson said, “it would be our hope that our success would be even greater so that we can assist many more.”

Deadline for contributions is Oct. 15.

According to Grant County Sheriff Nate Dreckman “too often lost in the mix of the disaster is the fact that sheriff’s emergency responders themselves suffer a major personal and family loss while still being expected to come to work, do their jobs and continue to rescue and help others in need.”

Those who wish to contribute may make checks payable to the BSSA, with SAS Louisiana in the memo line. Checks may be mailed to the sheriff’s department at P.O. Box 67, Whitehall, WI 54773 or the BSSA at P.O. Box 398, Medford, WI 54451.
