Construction on a new hospital building in Whitehall officially began last week with a formal groundbreaking ceremony right outside the current Gundersen Tri-County Hospital building.

Minneapolis-based firm Kraus-Anderson (KA) is the contractor for the project to replace the 60-year-old hospital that serves Whitehall and the surrounding areas. Construction is expected to be completed in the fall of 2023.

A press release sent by KA said GROTH Design Group designed the two-story, 69,000-square foot hospital. It will feature private patient rooms, a trauma center and a helipad landing zone near emergency services. The hospital will also include an ER, imaging, lab, pharmacy, surgical, dietary, rehabilitation and transitional care. A new ambulance and maintenance building will also be built on the site. The project will also remodel the current clinic.

KA has worked on several Gundersen Health Systems projects, including the Legacy Building, a 430,000-square-foot, six-story hospital in La Crosse.

The release said Gundersen Tri-County has 250 staff members and 30 providers and serves 19,000 patients annually.
