Independence approves ice fishing contest, rink

The annual ice fishing contest in Independence is moving forward.

The Elk Rod and Gun Club received their temporary alcohol license, as well as permission to close Second Street from County Highway Q down to lake for the first weekend in February. Council members also approved setting up an ice rink on the lake.

Work continues on creating an updated ordinance book for the city of Independence, according to city council member Deb Marsolek.

“We’re doing what we can and we’ll keep going when we have a full committee to discuss,” Marsolek said.

Two of the committee members have moved out of the area.

The city council members heard updates from the police committee meeting. The new deputy started her academy training Jan. 9. The department is also looking at five other candidates: one is fully credentialed, one is about to graduate, and the other three are looking for sponsors.

Council member Riley Foltz submitted his resignation by letter, since he will be moving out of the city.

The board members also met in closed session for 16 minutes to discuss the purchase of public property, but no related action was taken in open session.
