Independence council approves discount on Markham lots

Independence city council members approved a five percent discount on lots in the Markham addition.

The first five lots had been offered for 10 percent off, with the next five at five percent off. Currently, 12 lots remain. Mayor Robert Baecker asked the city council members if they wanted to continue the discount on the remaining lots.

“You don’t get nothing (in taxes)  for an empty lot,” council member Cleo Skroch said.

Council members voted 3-1 in favor of a five percent discount, as motioned by council member Tim Hanson. Skroch voted against, preferring a 10 percent discount.

Baecker also mentioned that Parsons Energy had sent a response to the revocation of the mining permit. He called it a “form letter,” pointing out a lack of specific responses to the city’s concerns. The letter also asked who to contact to appeal the revocation. No action was taken regarding Parsons Energy at this meeting.

Council members also voted 3-1 to approve a $15,400 estimate from Slaby Electric for the City Hall air conditioners. Council member Deb Marsolek expressed concern that the city was looking at an estimate, rather than a formal bid, but also acknowledged that the repairs should move forward.  The issue was originally brought to the council’s attention in April 2022. Tim Hanson was the only member to vote nay.

In other matters, council members:

• Approved two liquor licenses and one picnic permit.

• Approved a $2,950 surveying contract with Short Elliott Hendrickson for the Block 1 alley.

• Discussed further enforcement of fines for unsightly properties.
