Independence hires new police chief

There is a new top law enforcement officer in Independence after the city council voted last week Monday to hire Chad Halverson as the new city police chief.

The vote came after a closed session to discuss candidates during the council’s regular monthly meeting. Halverson has been on the police force for a number of years, serving both in full- and part-time capacities.

Former chief Derrick Vold had to retire from police work due to medical issues. The city also lost full-time officer, Matt Pedersen, to the Trempealeau County Sheriff’s Department. Mayor Robert Baecker said the city is still looking to hire two officers.
