Man booked in county homicide

A Melrose man is in custody in the Trempealeau County Jail for charges related to the homicide of Kyle Dahl.
Trempealeau County Sheriff Brett Semingson confirmed Wednesday morning that a release had been sent to other media outlets on Tuesday reporting that Todd Gieck, 61, was arrested for the crime. He is being held in the jail on charges of first-degree reckless homicide, first-degree recklessly endangering safety and possession of a firearm by a felon. The Times did not receive the release, though the department said it was sent to the local newspaper.
Gieck is alleged to have shot Dahl on May 15 near the intersection of Highway 53 and County Road TT between Ettrick and Galesville. The death was first reported as suspicious before being deemed a homicide. Dahl, 36, lived in Ettrick and is survived by a wife and two young children.
The sheriff’s department announced on May 24 that it had a suspect in custody on an unrelated charge; the most recent release said Gieck was arrested on May 18. The county jail roster shows Gieck as having been booked into the Trempealeau County Jail on May 30. The department has not indicated if there was another suspect involved. On May 28, Gieck was charged with possessing a firearm after being convicted of an out-of-state felony and possession of THC in Jackson County.
As of Wednesday morning, charges had not been officially filed.
Gieck uses the aliases Todd Gleck and Jim Olson.
