Mayzek tops Kimmel in Arcadia mayor race

Kevin Mayzek

A race between two Arcadia city government veterans was close, but the city will have a new mayor and it won’t be the former mayor.

Kevin Mayzek, currently an alderman in the second ward, received 202 votes while John Kimmel, who previously served as the city’s mayor, received 197. Mayzek will replaced Rob Reichwein, who has been the city’s mayor since defeating Kimmel in a recall election in 2015. Reichwein elected not to seek another term.

“I’m excited to get going,” Mayzek said. “Thanks to Arcadia! I will be working hard to move Arcadia in the right direction. I will follow Rob’s footsteps and we will move forward in a positive direction. I feel we can make great things happen.”

Mayzek has served on the council for 10 years, representing the second and third wards. He was active in the city’s recreation program and has served on numerous city boards and committees, including the fire board, parks and recreation commission, housing and building standards, board of review and library board. He has worked for 41 years at Ashley Furniture Industries and is supervisor of the service department.

Kimmel had served as the city’s mayor since 2006 before losing to Reichwein, 373-164 in a recall election.

In addition to Mayzek becoming mayor, thus vacating is alderperson position, the council will have a newcomer in Kyle Myhre in the third ward. Myhre received 15 votes as a registered write-in candidate to replace Marlys Kolstad, who did not seek reelection.
