Peterson, Koss win weight classes, Titans take second at Cadott Invite

A pair of Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau/Melrose-Mindoro high school wrestlers were crowned champions in their respective weight classes and the Titans placed second as a team at Saturday’s Cadott Invitational.

Whitehall placed ninth as a team at the same event. 

The Titans are scheduled to visit West Salem for a dual on Tuesday and continue their schedule with a quad meet at Aquinas on Friday.

Whitehall is slated for a triangular at Osseo-Fairchild on Tuesday.

Cadott Invitational

Ben Peterson of G/M won the 170-pound bracket, pinning his first two opponents before winning the title match by a 10-7 major decision over Ethan Upson of Phillips.

Carson Koss also left with a first-place finish, going 4-0 in the 145-pound competition.

Koss collected three pins—including one in three minutes, 39 seconds in the title match over Matthew Poulos of Whitehall—and another win by decision.

Menomonie was the only team to outscore the Titans on Saturday, winning the event with 562 points. A 485-point day for the Titans outscored 17 other teams and was just ahead of third place Glenwood City with 475.

Jackson Blaken (132) placed second for the Titans, winning his first three matches before falling in the first-place match. Mitch Berg (182) and Braydon Lockington (220) also took home second place finishes with 3-1 records.

Macki Kaz stacked a pair of pins in the 132-pound girls competition to win first as well.

The Titans got a third-place finish from David Hiles (138), who finished with three pins. Fourth place finishers for G/M included Calvin Davis (170) and Alex Wieczorek (195).

Four Titans finished in fifth place on Saturday, including Cisco Jimenez (285), Colton Koss (106), Layne Fry (126) and Gunnar Johnson (160). Koda Purney took seventh in the 113-pound bracket, while Jeron Hansen (145) and Scott Johnson (132) placed eighth.

Other finishes for G/M included Max Knapmiller (182) and Mason Hale (170) each taking 10th, Carter Kouba (285) placing 11th and Mathew Stoner (145)13 wrestling to 12th.

Landon Windsor (152, 13th), Austin Eichelt (160, 13th), Gunnar Kremer (120, 13th), Wyatt Oines (132, 13th), Lane Rhyme (138, 13th), Hayden Fry (152, 14th) and Hunter Lefler (160, 14th) all competed on Saturday as well.

Poulos led all Norse wrestlers on Saturday with his second-place finish and 3-1 record. He finished with two pins.

Whitehall placed ninth as a team at the invitational with 236 points, behind the top three teams as well as Cadott (421), Regis-Altoona (374), Hayward (344), Cumberland (330) and Phillips (321).

The Norse beat 10th place Westfield by a single point.

Eric Kleinhans (182) finished 2-1 to take third, and Luke Matejka placed sixth at 170 pounds. Nolan Thompson (113) also finished sixth for Whitehall, and Andy Flores (120) finished eighth.

Oriah Anderson (138), Braydon Fonstad (152) and Broc Coburn (160) all finished in 11th place, while teammates Corbin Larson (220), Frank Juresh IV (106) and Daniel Rubio-Cruz (132) took 12th.

Whitehall’s Theo Mikesell (160) finished 16th.
