Sheriff: Leads, but no arrests yet in mink case

The Trempealeau County Sheriff’s Department is still looking for the individual responsible for releasing approximately 3,000 mink from a fur farm in Independence.

According to a press release sent last week, a subject – or subjects — cut a hole in a chain link fence surrounding a mink farm during the late evening hours of Aug. 11 or early morning hours of Aug. 12. After entering through the opening in the fence, the subject opened the cages of approximately 3,000 mink. 

The property owners have since been working on capturing the escaped mink, so the exact loss is unknown. The Olson Fur Farm, located at W22875 State Road 121, housed approximately 4,000 mink.

At the start of this week, Sheriff Brett Semingson said the department is investigating some leads, though no arrests had been made and no suspects had been developed.
