Trempealeau earns ‘High Flyer’ designation
The village of Trempealeau earned the title of High Flyer this summer.
Bird City Wisconsin — part of the Milwaukee Audubon Society — was created in 2009 and recognizes communities across the state who combine conservation and education to make their area healthy for birds and people.
Bird City Wisconsin’s website indicates its goal is to “support our communities in their efforts to protect and manage green space, educate their citizens, build and erect nesting structures, landscape with native plants, reduce threats to birds such as collisions and outdoor cats, and generally make urban areas both friendlier for birds and places where people want to live and work.”
After 13 years as a bird city, Trempealeau received the higher honor of High Flyer honors, which are given to communities “that truly go above and beyond in their conservation and education programs,” according to a press release from the village in July.
Thirty-four Wisconsin communities hold High Flyer status.
The village was named a bird city by Bird City Wisconsin in 2011, which requires a community to focus on bird habitat, threat reduction, education/engagement and sustainability while also recognizing World Migratory Bird Day on Oct. 12.
Trempealeau’s World Migratory Bird Day celebration was at the Trempealeau National Wildlife Refuge and included birding hikes, bird feeder workshops, presentations and more. The 2024 event is slated for April 11.
