Trempealeau village board to see shake-up in next week’s election

Nearly half of the seats on the Trempealeau Village Board could see changes pending the results of next Tuesday’s election.

The biggest change will come at the head of the board as Trempealeau will have a new village president.

Current board trustee Jeff Barry is the lone name on the ballot to fill the president opening after current president Kurt Wood announced in December he did not plan to file for re-election and will step away from the board in April.

Barry will also appear on the ballot as a trustee, meaning voters can vote for him in the president race and trustee race. If he is elected to both, Barry will be able to choose which position he fills.

There will be three trustee seats available this spring with incumbents Barry, Peg Sieger and Jackie Pyka seeing their terms end.

Joining Barry on the ballot for trustee seats will be Sieger and new candidate Glenn Brommerich.

Pyka filed non-candidacy papers and will not seek re-election.

Resident Lee Medema is a registered write-in candidate for the village board, said village clerk Kathy Peterson, which means the village will only have to count write-in votes for Medema since there are enough people running to fill the three open trustee seats.

The municipality only has to officially count the registered write-in votes and not the other write-in votes for candidates that are not registered. All votes are still tallied.

Others can still join the race as registered write-in candidates, but they need to do so by filling out a campaign finance registration statement CF-1 form through Peterson before noon on Friday, March 31.
