Whitehall city council discusses garbage bins

Whitehall might follow Independence’s lead in exchanging trash bags for bins.

Dave Pientok of Tri-City Sanitation presented about the proposed change at the monthly meeting.  Whitehall residents would be able to choose between 35-gallon and 64-gallon bins, with the initial cost of the bins covered by Tri-City. As in Independence, there would be a grace period where both bins and bags are accepted.

Council members expressed various concerns, including questioning if this would affect the city’s recycling quota or if people would leave the bins out too long.

“There’s no perfect way to do this,” Pientok acknowledged.

No decisions were made at this meeting, but the council members agreed to discuss the matter further. Pientok also let them know that he was presenting the same situation at the Blair meeting the following night.

The council also met in closed session regarding employment decisions.
