Whitehall roadwork continues on schedule

The Whitehall city council was told last week that work on Hobson Street is on schedule despite a rainy spring.

The council received an update from Haas Sons regarding the Hobson Street project. Work has proceeded from where they left off last year up to Sunset, with work continuing up to Sheila and the east driveway of the school.  Roadwork in front of the school can’t start until June 9, which lines up with the schedule thus far.

Council members Kurt Johnson and Frank Juresh said that resident response has been decent, with a roughly even number of complaints and compliments. The water mains had few gates in that section; the next section has more, which should reduce the number of residents affected by shut-offs.

The council voted to pay the $164,344.50 bill from Haas Sons.

The Whitehall fire department had received a project estimate for roof repairs but was surprised by the estimated cost of $358,000 to $462,000.  After looking at the cost, the council decided to put the project out for bid in order to obtain compatible numbers.

Having bids will give the council more options.

“We don’t have to take the bid,” Juresh said.

The council also scheduled an initial board of review for property assessments for June 6 at 10 am.  Since it’s a reevaluation year, there are additional requirements on when the meeting must be held. However, not all the evaluations are complete. Therefore, the initial board of review will adjourn until July 25, when petitions will be heard.
