Several emergency crews from Trempealeau County were called to Jackson County last Thursday to assist with a crash that involved up to 50 vehicles.
The Wisconsin State Patrol reported the crash occurred just before 6 a.m. on Thursday at Interstate 94 mile marker 96, near Hixton. A portion of I-94 remained closed until 9:30 p.m. as emergency crews worked to clear the scene. Despite the number of vehicles and people involved, there were no deaths and the only injuries reported were minor.
The report said the crash was caused by freezing rain, which caused icy roadway conditions on the I-94 corridor from Menomonie to Black River Falls. There were numerous crashes, run-offs and jackknifed semis units.
Upon arrival, emergency officials saw a semi until was in the median on fire with two passenger vehicles underneath. There were several secondary crashes and run-offs in the general vicinity.
Passengers of the vehicles were transported by bus to another location.
Among those responding were the Blair-Preston Fire Department, Trempealeau County sheriff’s and highway departments, Osseo Fire Department and first responders, the Strum Fire Department and first responders, the Pigeon Falls Fire Department and Tri-County Ambulance, along with a handful of agencies from Jackson County.
