Indees struggle in two losses

The Independence boys basketball team struggled on both ends of the court in two nonconference losses early last week.

The Indees had two long road trips as they lost to Plum City/Elmwood in Plum City 72-31 last week Monday and in Boyceville 82-47 on Tuesday. 

The losses put their record at 1-16 and they still sit at 0-11 in Dairyland Conference play. The final stretch of the regular season begins this week as the Indees played at Alma/Pepin on Tuesday and will host Gilmanton on Friday. Next Thursday they’ll head to Alma Center Lincoln for their last scheduled regular season game.

The Indees managed just 11 points in the first half as they trailed by 31 at halftime.

Independence’s offense picked up in the second half, but the game was already well in hand.

Ben Pyka led the team with 14 points while Angel Mendoza Reyes scored eight, Xavier Santillan finished with three and Aberlardo Lopez Cruz, Nathan Pyka and Wes Pfaff all had two points.

The Indees had one of their better halves of the season, but still trailed by 18 points at halftime.

Independence scored 28 points in the first half, which is equal or better than they’ve managed in five entire games this season. However, they gave up 46 points as the Bulldogs were in control.

The Indees offense slowed down in the second half as the Bulldogs pulled away.
