Independence school board considers insurance options

In light of increasing costs, Independence school board is considering switching healthcare providers for the upcoming school year. 

United Healthcare, the district’s current provider, had initially estimated a 9.5 percent increase in costs for the next year, revised to 4.8 percent, superintendent Barry Schmitt said. In light of these numbers, the district is considering switching to a new provider, Exemplar. Board members had a virtual meeting with the company’s ceo in May. 

“I really got the impression that these guys are trying to keep costs down.”  Schmitt said.

One unique feature of Exemplar is that they encourage individuals to get a second opinion before pursuing significant procedures. It also helps the insurance company by providing more information. Exemplar would also provide a digital kiosk for online health consultations.

“I like the fact that they are seeking the second opinion. I think that’s an important part of keeping costs down.”  Jen Rombalski, board member, said.

The company also offered a thorough breakdown of employee costs, including single, single and spouse, and adult with child. If the contract was accepted, it would be in place July 1 of this year through June 30, 2023.

The district also accepted two resignations: Chris McDonnell, middle/high school math, and Holly Knutson, first grade. McDonnell was new to the district this year, but Knutson had been with the district for ten years.
