G-E-T boys team wins one of three

The Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau boys basketball team ended a busy string of games last week, playing three times to end a trek of five games in 10 days.

The Red Hawks went 1-2 last week, grabbing a conference win over Black River Falls before playing Luther to a tight loss on Thursday and falling to La Crescent-Hokah at the Midwest Players Classic on Saturday.

After a few days off, G-E-T (5-7 overall, 2-2 Coulee Conference) will see its schedule resume with a visit from Viroqua (1-8, 0-3) this Thursday.

Cody Schmitz (24 points) and the Red Hawks earned their second conference win of the season last Tuesday in a home triumph over the Tigers.

A three-point lead at halftime expanded into a win for G-E-T, which also got 11 points from Braden Anibas.

The Tigers (7-6, 2-3) got 16 points from Colin Zillmer.

Thursday’s conference effort was a strong fight for G-E-T, but the hosts ended on the losing end at G-E-T High School.

Anibas led the Red Hawks with 23 points, just ahead of Schmitz with 19. Luther led by eight at halftime, and G-E-T couldn’t close the gap in the second half.

Luther (11-1, 4-1) saw three players finish in double digits, including a game-high 24 points from Logan Bahr to go with 13 from Kodi Miller and 12 from Synclair Byus.

A 9-3 run for the Lancers to open the second half was the difference in Saturday’s tournament game at the La Crosse Center.

The Red Hawks led for much of the first half, but La Crescent-Hokah (9-3 this season) snuck into halftime with a 35-34 lead. 

Coach Jared McCutchen’s team was efficient—scoring on 54.9 percent of their shots—but couldn’t match La Crescent-Hokah down the stretch.

Four players hit the 10-point threshold for the Lancers, who were led by a 22-point showing from Carter Todd. Schmitz matched with 22 points of his own, including 20 in the first half.
