Miller breaks program floor record, GMC gymnasts edged by West Salem

Abby Miller collected a new program record as she continues her dominant senior season for the Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau/Melrose-Mindoro/Cochrane-Fountain City high school gymnastics co-op.

Miller overtook the all-time record for floor routine by scoring a 9.75 at a home dual meet against West Salem/Aquinas in Galesville on Thursday. She is now the top-ranked gymnast in the event in all of Division 2.

The visitors walked away with the team win, narrowly defeating GMC 138.825-134.6. The two teams will see each other again this week at West Salem High School in a Tuesday triangular with Arcadia.

GMC started last week on a positive note, edging Viroqua by two-tenths of a point in their Monday clash.

Miller finished with the best all-around score (36.175) of any gymnast on Thursday and also took the top score in floor and vault (9.3). She rounded out her day with an 8.675 on bars, good for second, and an 8.45 on beam.

Miller edged Taliya Michlig of West Salem, who won both bars (9.05)  and beam (9.15) to help her to a second-place all-around score of 36.05.

Trista Thill had a strong showing for GMC also, placing third in all-around scores with a 34.125. Thill finished third on beam (8.65), fourth in vault (8.4) and floor (9.1) as well as fifth on bars (8.175).

Amanda Pierson finished sixth for the hosts with a 32.025, which included an 8.25 on beam and an 8.175 on floor. She also had scores of 7.95 on vault and 7.7 on bars.

Just behind Pierson was teammate Tori Thoma in seventh (31.275). Thoma’s best event was floor, where she finished with an 8.775. She finished eighth on vault (8.05) as well as ninth on beam (7.25) and 10th on bars (7.2).

Abbi Bronsteatter finished ninth with a 22.925 to round out GMC’s scores, scoring an 8.7 on floor to go with a 6.85 for beam and 7.575 on bars. She did not compete in vault.

Mikayla Johnson received an 8.0 on vault, her only event.

The Blackhawks had three of the top five all-around scores on Monday but GMC did enough to hang on for a narrow conference win.

Miller again led GMC with a 35.75, and her 9.05 on vault stood as the highest score of any gymnast in the event.

Viroqua’s Morgan Siekert finished first overall with her 35.9, claiming the top scores on beam (8.8) and floor (9.6). Teammate Isabell Korn was third thanks in part to the top score (9.2) on bars.

Pierson finished fourth for GMC with a 31.875, and teammates Bronsteatter (31) and Thoma (30.625) took sixth and seventh, respectively.

Thill scored an 8.4 on bars, 8.2 on beam and 8.9 on floor but did not compete in vault. Johnson carded an 8.075 on vault.
