Hugh A. Mahoney

Hugh Arthur Mahoney, 87, ended the journey of an extraordinary life on June 30, 2023.

Born the eighth of ten children on June 25, 1936, in Galesville, to James and Clara (Park) Mahoney, Hugh moved with his family at an early age to the Denver area where he spent his formative years. After U.S. Army service in Europe, Hugh attended Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., graduating magna cum laude. He became a teacher of English and History at a Catholic high school in New York City. Hugh was a key player in organizing the first parochial school teachers’ union in the United States. This template of organizing educators was copied in other major cities.

Hugh worked as a cook at a Wisconsin supper club and started a bakery in a small town. For many years, he was a food service administrator in Minneapolis. Hugh was dedicated to providing the highest quality food for people with disabilities at Clara Doerr and Lindley Hall, and other residences.

Over the years, Hugh stayed in constant touch with his large, widely-dispersed family. During the holidays, most could expect a superbly rendered original and individually hand-painted watercolor Christmas card. Antique stores and flea markets often saw him hunting bargains for his one-man business of trading antique jewelry. Hugh was a voracious reader and incisive thinker. He wrote prodigiously. Among his many manuscripts are four published novels. In later years, he wintered in Mexico, learning the culture and teaching English at a free school he founded. Author, teacher, artist, family historian, collector, philanthropist, and humanitarian – his life defied encapsulation. Hugh made acquaintances easily, leaving an indelible impression on those he engaged.

The last living member of his immediate family, Hugh is survived by dozens of nieces and nephews, all of whom he personally knew. He also leaves behind an even larger number of good friends. His family wishes to particularly thank Jean Grossman, whose constant caring and compassionate presence during his final days is deeply appreciated. 

Interment will be at St. Bridget’s Cemetery in Ettrick, Wisconsin.
