Cardinals pull away from Norse with second quarter scores

Two second quarter touchdowns gave Eleva-Stum a big lead at halftime and they held on to beat Whitehall, 30-14, last week.

The Norse scored and kicked a point after to get within a point at 8-7, but the Cardinals scored two touchdowns before halftime then put the game away with another in the fourth quarter.

The loss put Whitehall at 1-5 overall and 1-3 in Dairyland Conference play. They’ll host Independence/Gilmanton for a game this Friday. The Indees are winless on the season, coming off of a 28-8 loss to Melrose-Mindoro. The Norse will play at Mel-Min next week.

A 24-yard touchdown run by CJ Johnston had the Norse close, but the Cardinals took control of the game before halftime.

E-S struck first with a 25-yard touchdown run and two-point conversion in the first quarter. But Johnston got free for a touchdown in the second and the point after made it a one-point game. That’s as close as the Norse would get, however.

The Cardinals scored on a four-yard run, the ensuing two-point conversion made the score 16-7. The longest score of the night came next as a 69-yard run put six more points on the board for E-S as they took a 22-7 lead into halftime.

Whitehall kept battling as Mason Pientok connected with Nick Katzman for a 15-yard touchdown in the third quarter. But the Cardinals responded and added a two-point conversion to take a 16-point lead in the fourth.

E-S ran for 305 yards in the game, led by Alex Anderson who ran for 167 with three touchdowns. Brennan Hanner finished with 67 and another touchdown and Ryan Julson ran for 49.

Bo Killian led Whitehall with 82 rushing yards, Johnston added 57 and Pientok totaled 24. Pientok’s touchdown pass to Katzman was the only completed pass in the game.
