The Independence/Gilmanton high school volleyball team saw its season end last Tuesday in a regional playoff game on the road.

The 11th-seeded Indees traveled to play one of the top teams in the Dairyland Conference this season in Trempealeau County opponent Cochrane-Fountain City (23-7 overall, 8-1 Dairyland).

Tuesday’s match saw the road team earn early leads in each of the first two sets before the Pirates gathered themselves to win in a sweep.

Independence/Gilmanton ends the year with a 7-13 record, an improvement from last year’s run of 2-13. Only three seniors leave the team this fall, giving Independence/Gilmanton a chance to continue building on its 2023 season.

A 5-1 lead from Independence/Gilmanton surprised Cochrane-Fountain City in the opening set on Tuesday, but the Pirates outscored the Indees 24-8 the rest of the way to earn a one-set advantage.

It was again the Indees who claimed an early lead in set two, but C-FC turned a 10-6 lead into another convincing win before the hosts rounded out the match with a dominating performance in the third and final set.

Cochrane-Fountain City advanced to play third-seeded Pacelli on the road last Thursday.
