Red Hawk girls win two in Coulee basketball

The Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau High School girls basketball team had momentum as it prepared this week to face a nearby team off to a good start to the 2023-24 season.

The Red Hawks rattled off back-to-back wins last week—both in the Coulee Conference—to improve to 3-4 on the year, including 2-1 in conference play.

One of the teams above G-E-T in the Coulee standings, Arcadia (3-1 Coulee), visited G-E-T this Tuesday.

West Salem (6-0, 3-0 Coulee) is set to host G-E-T this Friday.

Senior Tatum Johnson led the Red Hawks in both of their wins last week, scoring 33 total points.

A career-best 21-point night from Johnson and more than 50 rebounds as a team helped the Red Hawks past the Blackhawks (1-6, 0-4 Coulee) in last Tuesday’s win.

Johnson and the host Red Hawks doubled the visitors’ offense in the first half, out-scoring Viroqua 31-15 to take an early advantage.

Sophomore Amara Brantner also had her best game in a G-E-T jersey, adding 14 points. Rachel Diehl had 11 points for Viroqua.

It was again Johnson (12) and Brantner (7) who led G-E-T in scoring against the Tigers in Thursday’s home win.

After putting up 62 points two days prior, it was more of a defensive focus that helped the home team on Thursday—no player hit the 10-point mark for Black River Falls (1-5, 1-3 Coulee).
