Indees struggle to score in two conference losses

While the team put the ball in the basket well in one game, points were hard to come by for Independence/Gilmanton in two Dairyland Conference matchups last week.

The Indees scored 29 points in the first half of its 64-62 nonconference loss against New Auburn last week Monday. Comparable offensive efforts would’ve kept them competitive in two other games, but I/G managed just 17 in a 59-point loss to Cochrane-Fountain City on Tuesday and fell to Eau Claire Immanuel Lutheran, 60-29, on Friday.

The losses dropped the Indees to 0-7 on the season prior to Monday’s game at home against Houston, Minn. The team plays at Alma Center Lincoln on Thursday and at Coulee Christian this coming Tuesday. I/G returns to Independence for a game against Blair-Taylor next Friday.

New Auburn 64 I/G 62

The Indees were in the lead for almost the entire second half until a basket with 10 seconds left gave the Trojans the win.

I/G had a 29-22 lead at halftime and kept an advantage throughout most of the rest of the game. I/G led by five with five minutes left and three with three minutes remaining. The team still had a three-point lead with about 90 seconds left before a New Auburn basket cut the advantage to one.

I/G’s Chase Jesse converted one of two three throws to put I/G ahead 62-60, but the Indees wouldn’t score again. New Auburn tied the game on its next possession with 1:05 left.

The Indees took time off the clock and got the ball to Xavier Santillan, but the senior missed a three pointer. New Auburn got the rebound and called time out with 19.7 seconds remaining in the game.

The Trojans drew up a play that got an open layup, making the score 64-62 with 10 seconds showing on the clock.

After the Indees called a time out, Angel Mendoza got a contested shot off near the basket, but the ball bounced off the rim and went out of bounds as time expired.

I/G had one of its better shooting games, making 34 percent of its field goals and about 72 percent of its free throws. Brandon Sylla led the team with 22 points while Grady Meier scored 18.

C-FC 76 I/G 17

Offensive struggles returned for the Indees as the team had a difficult time getting shots off against the Pirates.

C-FC scored the first eight points and took a double-digit lead with about eight minutes left in the half. The Pirates closed the first half with an 18-2 run to take a 44-10 lead into halftime.

I/G had 37 field goal attempts in the game — making five — and committed 26 turnovers.

Sylla led I/G with six points. C-FC had four players in double figures, led by Drew Wicka, who scored 16.

ECI 60 I/G 29

The Lancers scored the first 11 points in the game hosted by I/G in Gilmanton.

Even after the Indees finally got on the board with a three pointer, they couldn’t keep up with the Lancers. ECI took a 33-12 lead into halftime and outscored I/G by 10 in the second half.

I/G shot 32.4 percent in the game and were led by Grady Meier’s seven points. Carlos Flores and Jesse both scored six.
