G-E-T to alternate longer spring break

Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau School District leaders hope a longer spring break every other year will help improve attendance.

The G-E-T School Board last Monday voted 7-0—with members Todd Roessler and Kara Nelson absent—to approve the 2024-25 school calendar, which includes a full week for spring break from March 24 to March 28.

Students will also not have school on March 21 due to a teacher inservice.

District Administrator Michele Butler said parents have asked the district about finding a way to add a spring break.

“Families were asking for this so they can do their planning for vacations and other things,” Butler said. “We do have a full week vacation in March to respond to parent feedback and hopefully improve overall attendance of some of our students and staff.”

The full week is likely to be offered every other year.

Added days from the longer spring break will result in the school year rolling into the start of June, with the final day set for June 5.

The first snow day in 2024-25 will not be made up. For snow days after, elementary school kids do not have a virtual day.

Middle and high school students will have a second snow day if needed, but after that will have virtual learning on snow days.

The 2025-26 calendar will be presented to the board in January.
