G-E-T softball team drops first two games
The Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau High School softball team is officially back in action after the Red Hawks played a pair of games last week to open the 2024 schedule.
Last Friday marked opening day for G-E-T, which fell to Prescott before dropping a closer matchup with Aquinas on Saturday.
Two Coulee Conference games await the program this week with a home game against West Salem scheduled for Tuesday and a visit to Viroqua slated for Friday.
Prescott 10 G-E-T 0
A team that ended last season one game away from the Division Three state tournament combined for 18 hits as the Cardinals (3-1 this season) won last Friday’s battle of the red birds.
Six different players finished with multiple hits for Prescott to help the Cardinals score seven runs across the first two innings.
Haley Giemza, Halene DeJager and Tatum Johnson each registered a hit for G-E-T.
DeJager and Samantha Stanton combined for three strikeouts on the mound, while Prescott’s Ella Stewart tossed six strikeouts and one walk.
Aquinas 4 G-E-T 2
Aquinas earned revenge on Saturday in a rematch of a 2023 regional playoff game.
Aquinas took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but Johnson scored on an error in the second and Caroline Mack scored on a Lorissa Thompson single to give the Red Hawks their first lead of the year.
The teams stayed knotted for the next three innings, but it was Aquinas that broke the tie with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh inning to claim victory.
DeJager pitched a complete game for G-E-T, allowing six hits and three earned runs while throwing five strikeouts to two walks.
Five different Red Hawks recorded hits.
