Norse softball starts slow in loss to Eagles

The Whitehall softball team was trailing by nine runs before ever stepping to the plate in last Thursday’s 14-4 loss to Alma/Pepin.

Walks and errors were an issue as the Eagles scored six runs with just one hit. That hit was a two-run single after a walk and a hit batter. After another walk and another hit batter, another run scored on the third hit batter of the inning. The fourth run scored on a walk and another on an error before a groundout made the score 6-0. The Eagles then got a big hit as a triple with the bases loaded plated three runs and put the team ahead by nine.

Whitehall chipped away with two runs in the bottom of the first as Taylor Johnson singled in one run and then scored herself on an error.

After a leadoff home run by the Eagles in the top of the second, Whitehall brought home two in the bottom half of the inning on a single by Olivia Killian.

The Eagles got one back in the third then scored three in the fourth to go ahead by 10 runs. The Norse weren’t able to score in either of its final two at-bats, losing by mercy rule after five innings.

Whitehall had four hits in the game with four different players getting one.

Kelsie Klomsten got the start for the Norse and took the loss with eight runs on one hit and three walks allowed in the first inning. Ashlyn Clatt replaced her in the first and pitched the rest of the game, allowing four hits and six runs on seven walks. Clatt also had two strikeouts.

Whitehall (1-2) was at home again on Tuesday with Blair-Taylor coming to town. They’re set to play on the road at Eleva-Strum on Friday before returning home to play Augusta this coming Tuesday.
