Pitching has led the way for the Blair-Taylor baseball team this year as junior Tavian Shramek had one of the most dominating performances possible with 21 strikeouts in a 4-0 win over Whitehall last week Tuesday.

The win improved B-T’s record to 4-0 on the season as they had allowed just five total hits in those games. The team won two more games later in the week to improve to 6-0 prior to games at Caledonia on Monday and Melrose-Mindoro on Tuesday. The team plays at Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau on Thursday, Cochrane-Fountain City on Friday and Bangor on Saturday.

The B-T ace struck out three of four batters he faced in the first inning. After allowing a hit to start the second, Whitehall threatened with an error on a bunt to put two on with no outs. It was no problem for Shramek, however, as he struck out the next three batters.

Shramek struck out two batters in the third and three in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.

Meanwhile, Whitehall ace Brayden Lisowski was also dealing. Neither team managed a run through seven innings, pushing the game into an eighth.

That’s when B-T took the lead as Shramek led off with a walk issued by Mason Pientok. Jackson Shramek was then hit by a pitch before Peyton Kelly walked to load the bases. Tavian Shramek scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch, then Jackson Shramek scored on another. Ryan Flynn brought home two runs with a single that put the Wildcats ahead 4-0.

Tavian Shramek took the mound again in the eighth, striking out the first – and only – batter he faced before reaching the 100-pitch limit. Brady Thompson then took the mound and struck out two of the three batters he faced.

Shramek’s final stat line on the hill was 21 strikeouts, one walk, three hit batters and two hits on 101 pitches in 7.1 innings. He also had two of the team’s four hits at the plate.

“He was extremely focused before the game,” B-T coach Jesse Lien said.  “As the game went along he seemed to get stronger and stronger.  I am so proud of all the work he has put in since last season to get to this point.”

Lisowski struck out 13 with three walks and four hits allowed in seven innings before Pientok came on in the eighth and was relieved by Seth Lambeck.

Lambeck had both of Whitehall’s hits.

The Thunder got on the board with two runs in the third, taking advantage of three walks and a hit batter. B-T got those back plus one more in the bottom half of the inning as Kole Trapp scored on a fielder’s choice before Austin Thompson singled in two runs. Jackson Shramek added an RBI double in the fifth.

The Wildcats had eight hits as both of the Shramek brothers had two, as did Thompson. Jackson Shramek and Thompson both had two RBIs.

The Wildcats again needed extras, but came away with the win after scoring in the top of the eighth inning on Thursday.

The home team tied the game at 6 with a run in the bottom of the seventh. However, Tavian Shramek led off the eighth with a single, then stole second and scored on a passed ball to put his team ahead by one run.

B-T took a big lead with four runs in the first inning with two coming home on a single by Trapp. Luther chipped away before tying the game with three runs in the fifth. Flynn scored to give B-T the lead in the top of the sixth, but Luther tied the game on an error in the bottom of the seventh.

Tavian Shramek had two of B-T’s six hits.

Oldendorf got the win, pitching the final four innings with four strikeouts while allowing two hits and two walks. Flynn pitched the first four innings, allowing two hits and three walks while striking out two.

The Wildcats came out swinging with 10 runs in the first two innings as they went on to win by the mercy rule after five innings on Friday.

B-T took control with six runs in the bottom of the first inning as Tavian Shramek led off with a single and scored on a double by Jackson Shramek. Kelly doubled Jackson Shramek home before scoring himself on a single by Austin Thompson. Trapp and Brayden Paulson connected on back-to-back doubles to make the score 6-0.

Kelly doubled Jackson Shramek home again in the second inning then scored on a hit by Brady Thompson. Another run came home when Trapp was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Flynn scored on a fielder’s choice, making the score 10-0.

Jackson Shramek scored for a third time in the game, coming home on a fielder’s choice in the third. After the Beavers plated one run in the fourth, B-T got it back in the bottom half of the inning.
