Norse split two close games in DC play

After losing a high-scoring game on Tuesday, the Whitehall baseball team won a low-scoring affair on Friday.

The Norse struggled early — allowing eight runs in the first four innings — in an 8-7 loss at Cochrane-Fountain City last week Tuesday. On Friday, however, the team got back on track, beating Pepin/Alma, 2-1.

Whitehall began this week with a 7-5 overall mark (5-4 in Dairyland Conference play) before Tuesday’s game at Blair-Taylor. The Norse are set to host Eleva-Strum on Thursday. This coming Monday, they’re scheduled to play at Augusta before playing two games against Melrose-Mindoro, at home on Tuesday and on the road next Thursday.

The Norse couldn’t catch up after falling behind early.

Whitehall scored four runs in the sixth inning and had the tying run on second in the sixth, but a pop-up and a groundout ended the game.

C-FC took the lead with four runs on two hits, three walks and an error in the second. They added two more runs on two hits and an error in the third and two on three hits in the fourth.

Whitehall didn’t score until the top of the fourth when Mason Pientok singled to start the inning and scored on a groundout by Brock Sluga.

Seth Lambeck singled with one out in the fifth and came home on a double by Brayden Lisowski. Will Youngbauer then singled Lisowski home, making the score 8-3.

The Norse made the game interesting in the sixth as the first six batters all reached base with four coming around to score. Lambeck hit a two-run double before Lisowski connected on an RBI single that brought the Norse within one.

Bo Killian doubled with one out in the top of the seventh, but was left on second base.

Sluga took the loss, allowing six earned runs on four hits and four walks in 2.1 innings. Lambeck finished the game, holding the Pirates to two runs the rest of the way.

Lisowski went four-for-four at the plate with two RBIs. Lambeck had two hits and two RBIs.

Lisowski kept the Eagles off-balance all game as the Norse picked up the win.

Whitehall’s senior ace pitched a complete game with seven strikeouts while holding the Eagles to one hit and two walks. He also scored the first run of the game as he walked in the top of the first inning and scored on a single by Sluga.

The Eagles tied the game in the bottom of the second thanks to an error and a double. The Norse retook the lead in the next half inning as Lambeck singled with one out and scored on an error.
