Norse drop three in DC play
The Whitehall softball team had a tough time keeping its opponents off the scoreboard in three losses last week.
The team fell to Blair-Taylor, 15-2, in a game that began on Tuesday and ended on Wednesday (see story elsewhere in Sports) before falling to Eleva-Strum, 11-1, and Melrose-Mindoro, 13-6.
The Norse had a 5-10 overall record (3-8) in DC play before Monday’s game in Augusta. Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association play begins Thursday as the seventh-seeded Norse host (10) Onalaska Luther. The winner of that game will play at (2) Cashton this coming Tuesday.
E-S 11 Whitehall 1
The Cardinals scored seven runs in the top of the fifth to break the game open.
E-S took the lead with three runs in the second and added another in the third. They began the fifth with two singles followed by a walk to load the bases and an error that brought a run home. After a hit batter brought another run home, the Cardinals scored five runs on five straight walks.
Whitehall was held to two hits in the game while striking out 12 times, and walking once.
Ashlyn Clatt took the loss, surrendering 10 walks and four hits while striking out five.
Mel-Min 13 Whitehall 6
The Norse put a scare in the top team in the DC-Large, but the Mustangs answered.
It appeared Mel-Min was pulling away when the team scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 7-1 lead, but Whitehall answered with five runs to pull back within one. Two runs scored on a hit by Carson Coburn. Olivia Killian singled in two more and Eden Matejka sent a pitch into left field to make the score 7-6.
The Mustangs responded with another five-run inning. The team connected on four straight hits, including a triple to take a 12-6 lead. Mel-Min added another run in the sixth.
Taylor Johnson had three of Whitehall’s eight hits while Killian had two and two RBIs. Coburn and Matejka also had two RBIs in the game.
Pitching duties were split between Kelsie Klomsten and Clatt. Klomsten got the start, tossing the first four innings with four hits, five walks and one strikeout. Clatt finished the game, striking out two without a walk, while allowing six hits.
