I/G softball season ends with regional loss
After a promising start to the season, the Independence/Gilmanton softball team was never able to get back on track.
I/G won its first three games, including a victory over one of the top teams in the Dairyland Conference, Cochrane-Fountain City. However, the Indees struggled from there, finishing 4-11 on the season. Included in that total was a 13-0 loss to Pepin/Alma in the final regular season game and a 13-6 defeat by Osseo-Fairchild in the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association regional opener.
P/A 13 I/G 0
The Eagles scored 13 runs on 14 hits while the Indees couldn’t get going at the plate.
I/G had four hits in the game, but already trailed 6-0 before their first hit. The Eagles put up six runs on six hits in the top of the second. Leah Sylla doubled with one out in the bottom half of the inning, but was left on base.
A P/A homer added to the team’s lead in the top of the third and an RBI single later that inning made the score 8-0.
I/G had two straight hits to begin the fifth as Sylla and Shauna Dejno put the ball in play, but Sylla was tagged out trying to stretch her single to a double and Dejno was stranded on second.
The Eagles added five more runs on four hits, including a two-run home run by Megan Sterry — her second of the game — to go ahead by 13.
Sylla had half of I/G’s four hits in the game, going two-for-two at the plate.
Nora Schank took the loss, walking four and striking out two in six innings.
O-F 13 I/G 6
The Indees appeared to be in good position for an upset after a three-run first, but the Thunder struck for 10 in the second.
I/G had two runs come home on an error and another on a groundout by Arabelle Kniseley, but they couldn’t keep up with O-F.
Addisyn Koxlien began the bottom of the second with a home run for the Thunder, that was just the start. After a single and a walk, another single plated another run and O-F took the lead when two runs scored on a two-out error. After another error, the Thunder would connect for four hits, plating six runs.
The Indees loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the fifth, but managed only one run as Adison Pronschinske was hit by a pitch with two outs, making the score 11-4. O-F took advantage of two errors and two singles to score two in the bottom half of that inning.
I/G made a late charge as Nora Schank began the seventh with a double and scored on a two base hit by Pronschinske. Emma Cowen singled Pronschinske home, making the score 13-6. That’s as close as I/G would get.
In her final game for I/G, Pronschinske was three-for-three with two RBIs and two runs scored. The team had eight hits.
Schank took the loss despite allowing just three earned runs. O-F got 11 hits and worked for two walks while Schank struck out five. I/G committed four errors in the game.
