Appropriately enough, a canoe points the way to the Elk Rod and Gun Club's boat landing off Cross Road south of Independence. This landing as well as a new one being developed on 11 acres just purchased by the club off Highway 121 between Whitehall and Independence are key elements of a Trempealeau River trail being developed by the county's parks and recreation coordinator, Jack Haye.     (Times photograph by Debbie Foss)
