Joanne M. Swanson

 

Joanne Marilyn Swanson, 90, passed away Sunday, November 24, 2024, at Aspen Place in Viroqua.

Joanne was born August 2, 1934, to George and Myra (Fortney) Swanson. She graduated from Vernon County Normal School and taught for over 30 years at rural schools — Spring Green, Mequon, Milwaukee and Ettrick.

She loved baking, reading, crossword puzzles, and volunteering at Vernon Memorial Hospital and Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. Joanne enjoyed sitting in her swing in the summer and talking with her neighbors. She also enjoyed watching the Packers and Brewers, as well as traveling both here and abroad. Joanne liked to nap in her chair with her dog, Ginger. She was a friend to all who knew her and will be greatly missed. 

Joanne is survived by her brother, Robert “Punk” (Kay) Swanson of Viroqua; sisters-in-law: Dolores Swanson and Veronica Tresner, both of Viroqua; nieces: Heather, Sara, Jessica, and Hanna Swanson, Lori (Glenn) Parker, Catherine (David) Thurston, Anita (Jeff) Burckhardt; nephew, Mike Swanson; great nephews: Terrence Bambenek and Talon Swanson; great nieces: Morgan, Hailey, and Ashlie Parker; and many other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; grandparents; brothers: David and Wayne; nieces: Lynn Bambenek and Nancy Swanson; and nephew Gary Swanson.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Aspen Place, St. Croix Hospice, Dr. Deborah Prior, and Kari Solverson for their exceptional care.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to Aspen Place, Toys 4 Tots, St. Croix Hospice and Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Viroqua.

A Celebration of Life was held Monday, December 2, 2024, at 11:00 a.m., at Roth Family Cremation Center and Funeral Services. Pastor Chris Rajkumar officiated. A visitation was held from 10:00 a.m. until time of service. Burial took place at Viroqua Cemetery. Online condolences can be made at www.rothfamilycremation.com.
