Norse girls fall to C-FC, lose close games to A/P, G-E-T

With a few different bounces of the ball, the Whitehall girls basketball team could have pulled off a couple of wins last week, but it ended up with three losses.

The Norse got off to a sluggish start in a 55-41 loss to Cochrane-Fountain City last Tuesday. On Thursday and Saturday, however, Whitehall was close, but gave up late runs, falling to Alma/Pepin, 41-35, and Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau, 66-62 (see story elsewhere in Sports).

The losses put Whitehall at 4-10 on the season and 3-8 in Dairyland Conference play. The team played at Melrose-Mindoro on Tuesday of this week and will head to Alma Center Lincoln on Thursday before hosting undefeated Eleva-Strum this Saturday. Next Tuesday, Whitehall heads to Augusta before playing at Blair-Taylor on Thursday. 

C-FC 55 Whitehall 41

The Pirates scored 17 of the first 20 points in the game, and withstood a Whitehall run.

C-FC made a three-pointer on its first possession and jumped out to a 17-3 lead. Whitehall battled back and pulled within five after a three-point play by Ida Laurila. C-FC took a 25-17 lead into halftime.

Whitehall was within six early in the second half, but C-FC scored 11 of the next 12 points to pull away. 

Paige Lisowski led Whitehall with 16 points and Laurila finished with seven.

A 10-2 run in the second half was the difference as the Norse had trouble scoring down the stretch.

The game was close throughout as Whitehall held a 22-21 advantage at halftime. The teams were tied at 25 early in the second half before the Eagles scored 10 of the next 12 points in the game, including two three-pointers.

A basket by Aryana Ausderau and free throws by Lisowski brought the Norse within four late in the game, but the Norse wouldn’t score another point. 

Whitehall shot 22.4 percent from the field in the game, including three-for-22 on three-point attempts. Lisowski led the team with 11 points.
