Times awarded in state newspaper contest

The Trempealeau County Times received three awards in the Wisconsin Newspaper Association Foundation’s Better Newspaper contest.

Winners were announced last week, with the Times receiving one first-place award in addition to a third-place award and honorable mention.

The first-place award was for Local Column, as Andrew Dannehy’s “Just Another Week” received the top award in Division D for the second time in the last three years. All three of Dannehy’s submissions for this year’s award focused on government transparency. The judge for the competition noted the columns were: “Insightful and compelling reasons why open meeting and government laws are so critical, along with newspapers like this one.”

Judges also noted “solid reporting,” as Dannehy earned a third-place award in the Reporting on Local Government category.

The honorable mention award was in the Sports Action Photo category. The photo showed Whitehall’s Mason Przybylla pinned between two Alma/Pepin players while chasing a loose ball.

The Wisconsin Newspaper Association honored the work of newspapers across the state during its banquet held on Friday at The Madison Concourse Hotel in downtown Madison. Newspapers are separated into multiple divisions based on type and circulation. The Times competed in Division D, which includes non-daily newspapers with circulations between 2,250 and 4,499.
