Red Hawks pummel Blackhawks for sweep
The Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau softball team picked up what they hope is the first of a run of conference sweeps this spring with back-to-back bludgeonings of Viroqua.
The Red Hawks (5-0, 3-0 Coulee) outscored the Blackhawks (1-6, 0-3) by a combined score of 32-5 in their two games last week, needing a total of only 10 innings to secure the pair of decisive wins.
G-E-T is scheduled to wrap up the current week by hosting Westby on Thursday at 5 p.m. and playing at Onalaska on Friday at 4:30 p.m. Early next week, they’re slated to play at Altoona Monday at 5 p.m. and host Luther on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
G-E-T 21 Viroqua 4
An unrelenting onslaught of runs in the second innings assured the Red Hawks of a romp over the Blackhawks last Tuesday in Viroqua.
After pushing four runs across the plate in the top of the first, G-E-T dropped a 15 spot in the second to leave no doubt on the final result in an eventual mercy-rule victory. Five different G-E-T batters collected multiple hits on the evening, headlined by third baseman Kennedy Scow going 4 of 5 with a triple, three RBIs and three runs.
Additionally for the Red Hawks, center fielder Ruby Johnson went 2 for 3 with two walks, a triple, two RBIs and four runs, catcher Tori Thoma finished 2 for 4 with a walk, a triple, four RBIs and two runs scored, left fielder Lorissa Thompson was 2 for 4 with a double, an RBI and three runs, and first baseman Claire Baures went 2 for 4 with a double, an RBI and two runs.
In the circle, Sam Stanton allowed four runs (only one earned) on eight hits to go along with five strikeouts in five innings.
G-E-T 11 Viroqua 1
Though it wasn’t as lopsided as their first meeting two days prior, the Red Hawks had little to sweat in their rematch with Viroqua this past Thursday in Galesville.
Leading 2-1 in the bottom of the third, G-E-T created separation with a six-run rally that included a leadoff homer by Alexis Ouellette. A final three-run rally in the fifth brought the 10-run rule into effect, which included a leadoff blast by Ally Burns, a Thoma RBI single and an Ouellette sacrifice fly.
Ouellette, Thompson, Baures and Johnson each recorded two hits apiece in the win. Stanton gave up a single unearned run on four hits and one walk while punching out four in five innings of work.
