Arcadia’s conference title bid ends

While the Arcadia softball team was busy putting together a solid week of results against non-league competition, their dreams of a conference championship were officially dashed due to results elsewhere around the Coulee Conference.

West Salem’s sweep of G-E-T boosted their final record in Coulee play to 11-1, ensuring that they would clinch an outright conference title for a third consecutive spring.

The Raiders (15-3, 7-2 Coulee) eked out a 3-2 victory over the Panthers when they first met in late March, but West Salem went unbeaten in conference play from there and Arcadia’s 9-4 loss to G-E-T on Apr. 27 proved pivotal in the battle for Coulee supremacy.

Arcadia did go 4-1 against their slate of non-conference opponents last week, with the lone blemish being a 3-2 loss to Blair-Taylor. The Raiders wrap up Coulee play when they host Onalaska Luther on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

Arcadia 12 I/G 2

Home runs by Chloe Schlosstein and Tatum Drazkowski were the highlights of Arcadia’s win over the Indees (4-8) last Monday in Independence.

Schlosstein started the scoring with her solo shot to lead off the second inning. Drazkowski smacked a two-run blast to center to begin a four-run rally in the third that also featured Layna Wozney’s two-run double.

A three-run inning by the Raiders in the sixth — including back-to-back RBI singles courtesy of Madison Grotjahn and Riley Walters — helped bring the mercy rule into effect.

The Indees scored their two runs via a Sarah Roskos RBI single in the bottom of the fourth and a Celia Slaby RBI double in the sixth.

Wozney finished 2 for 3 with a double, a walk, two RBIs and three runs while Drazkowski went 2 for 4 with a homer, a double, two RBIs and two runs scored. Slaby and Hannah Ekern each doubled in the loss for Independence/Gilmanton.

Arcadia 11 D-A 1

A balanced attack at the plate propelled the Raiders to a five-inning win over Durand-Arkansaw (11-6) last Tuesday in Arcadia.

Already leading 2-0, the Raiders broke things open with five runs in the bottom of the third highlighted by Schlosstein’s three-run home run. They officially brought the mercy rule into effect in the fifth thanks to Wozney’s RBI double.

Wozney went 4 for 4 with two doubles, two RBIs and two runs, Amaya Schlesser finished 3 for 3 with a walk, an RBI and four runs scored, and Drazkowski was 2 for 4 with a triple, a double and two runs.

Wozney allowed one run in four innings pitched (including five strikeouts) before Teagan Pientok added a scoreless inning in relief.

Home tourney

The Raiders wrapped up their week with a home tournament last Saturday, where they picked up a pair of wins.

Arcadia knocked off the Ellsworth Panthers (4-11) 7-2, backed by another strong performance at the plate from Wozney, who went 2 for 3 with a home run and three RBIs. Tessah Ely added a two-run double in the victory.

The Raiders followed that up with a 10-4 win over Altoona (14-6) to defend their home field and secure the tourney title.
