BRF locks up third straight Coulee golf title

While much was still to be decided in the race for individual accolades at this week’s Coulee Conference Championship meet, the battle for the team conference championship was already wrapped up before anyone teed up in Sparta.

The Black River Falls boys golf team clinched the conference title last week, collecting enough points in the final two mini meets of the regular season to make it mathematically impossible for any other team to catch them in first at the 18-hole conference championship meet, which took place this past Tuesday at River Run Golf Course in Sparta.

The Tigers posted their worst result of the Coulee season by taking fourth at last Tuesday’s mini meet at Castle Rock Golf Course but bounced back to win their home mini meet at Skyline Golf Course on Thursday — their fifth win in seven mini meets — to secure their third straight conference crown.

BRF accrued 88 out of 98 possible points at the seven mini meets, leaving them 23 points ahead of Onalaska Luther in second place. Even if the Knights won Tuesday’s meet and the Tigers finished in last, Luther would only shave 18 points off the deficit.

Arcadia sophomore Landon Jaszewski slid from first to second in the individual points standings, with Luther sophomore Robert Bruns leading the way in the race to win player of the year with 117.5 points, ahead of Jaszewski’s total of 109.

Castle Rock meet

Arcadia saved some of their best golf for the final full week of the regular season, starting by tying for second in the team standings at the mini meet last Tuesday at Castle Rock Golf Course between Mauston and New Lisbon.

Jaszewski helped lead the charge for the Raiders, shooting a 41 to tie with Bruns for second just one stroke behind West Salem senior Coen Knutson’s winning score of 40. Owen Anderson fired a 43 for Arcadia, tying for sixth alongside a pair of Luther golfers: sophomore Colten Sawyer and freshman Nolan Muller.

Additionally for the Raiders, junior Brogan Solberg and freshman Trevor Mahutga each carded a 47.

Junior Braydan Van Vreede set the pace for Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau with a 42, leaving him in a tie for fourth with Hillsboro/Royall freshman Luke Holthe. The Red Hawks also had junior McGuire Slaby with a 46, senior Kylan Olson with a 49 and sophomore Jacob Filla with a 50.

Luther were the team winners for the day, putting up a 177 that left them a single stroke ahead of Arcadia and West Salem in the tie for second at 178. They were followed by BRF (182) in fourth, Westby/Viroqua (184) in fifth, G-E-T (187) in sixth and Hillsboro/Royall (199) in seventh.

Skyline meet

Brogan Solberg was fully dialed in at the final Coulee mini meet of the year last Thursday at Skyline Golf Course, firing a one-over 37 to place first overall with a round that included an eagle on the par-four 13th hole.

Solberg helped lead the Raiders to a third-place finish, an effort which also included Anderson and Jaszewski each shooting a 44 and Mahutga carding a 50.

Behind Solberg on the individual leaderboard were BRF senior Chris Antonelli and Bruns in a tie for second at 38, followed by G-E-T’s Slaby and West Salem freshman Cadyn Reding in a tie for fourth at 42.

Other scores for the Red Hawks included Van Vreede with a 44, senior Aiden Johnson with a 45 and both Olson and freshman Isaac Woyczik with a 50.

Black River Falls won their home meet with a cumulative score of 167 followed by Luther (171) in second, Arcadia (175) in third, West Salem (178) in fourth, Westby/Viroqua (179) in fifth, G-E-T (181) in sixth and Hillsboro/Royall (185) in seventh.
