Indees open DC play with shutout loss to Mustangs

Melrose-Mindoro scored two touchdowns in each of the first two quarters, and Independence/Gilmanton couldn’t get its offense going in a 35-0 road loss last week.

The Mustangs scored on a 36-yard run early in the first quarter, then a four-yard run with 5:33 left. Both point-after kicks were good as Mel-Min took a 14-0 lead into the second quarter.

The home team added two more scores in the second; the first was a two-yard touchdown run with seven minutes left in the quarter. The ensuing two-point conversion was no good. Mel-Min added another touchdown and a two-point conversion to take a 28-0 lead into halftime.

Mel-Min scored on its opening drive of the second half to go ahead by the final score.

Outside of a 41-yard catch by Hunter Kreibich, I/G’s offense struggled. That catch accounted for most of the team’s passing yards as Blake Slaby passed five of 14 for 63 yards and three interceptions. 

The Indees also struggled to move the ball on the ground, rushing for 43 yards on 25 attempts, an average of 1.7 per attempt. Chase Back led the team with 25 yards on 11 carries. 

Back led the team with 13 tackles. Klimek recorded an interception.

The loss dropped I/G to 0-3 on the season, while the Mustangs—ranked ninth in Division 7 in the Bound Wisconsin Coaches Poll— moved to 3-0.

The Indees host (2-1) Whitehall this week. The Norse are coming off a 47-0 win over Eleva-Strum (see story elsewhere in Sports). Whitehall’s only loss was a six-point defeat to an undefeated Arcadia team. 

I/G hits the road again next week, this time heading to Augusta to take on the winless Beavers.
