Red Hawks clipped by Westby
Coming off a competitive loss to the first-place West Salem Panthers in their prior conference match, the Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau volleyball team hoped to get back in the win column with a trip to Westby. Instead, they were handed a loss in straight sets.
The Norsemen (9-7, 1-3) glided past the Red Hawks (7-9, 2-2) 25-17, 25-23, 25-18 in their Coulee clash last Tuesday in Westby.
Trailing 22-14 in the second set, junior Rylynn Simmons fired in a kill for G-E-T, who proceeded to win the next five points on junior Jaylen Hilton’s serve to slice the deficit to 22-20. The Red Hawks later staved off two set points to make it 24-23, only for Westby’s Nataley Larson and Amelia Hoven to slam home a block to secure a two-set lead that they converted into a sweep.
Simmons with six kills and two aces for G-E-T. Sophomore Ally Burns finished with five kills; freshman Liliana Pederson with 10 digs; junior Taryn Leighty with 12 assists and two aces; and junior Amelia Walz with 11 assists.
The Red Hawks are back on the road to take on Black River Falls next Tuesday at 7 p.m. G-E-T previously outlasted BRF in five sets during their Sept. 1 meeting.
