Darcy J. Sonsalla

Darcy Joseph Sonsalla, 47, of rural Arcadia, passed away peacefully at home, January 20, 2024, with the love of his life, Karla, and his beautiful boys by his side. The room was filled with love and support as he was surrounded by family and friends.

Darcy was born to Marlene Sosalla, November 6, 1976, in La Crosse. Darcy graduated from Blair-Taylor High School in 1995. After graduation, he went on to college at UW–Madison and later transferred to North Dakota State College of Science where he received a degree in Culinary Arts. On September 10, 2011, Darcy married Karla Lundberg at the La Crosse Country Club, where Darcy was head chef at the time. They were blessed with two amazing boys, Ryker and Renon.

Darcy was a vivacious and warm-hearted individual whose passion for people and food was as boundless as his culinary talents. His love for people was evident in every dish that was prepared, whether making meals for family and friends or catering events for hundreds of people. His enthusiasm and genuine interest in others made him a natural connector, transforming each event into a celebration of relationships and shared moments.

Darcy was also a true outdoorsman whose heart was at home amidst nature. He was passionate about hunting, fishing and camping and loved sharing the outdoors with family and friends. For him, the thrill of the hunt, the joy of a successful catch, and the serenity of a night spent around a campfire were all the more meaningful when shared with loved ones.

Darcy is survived by his wife, Karla (Lundberg); sons: Ryker Allan and Renon Paul; mother, Marlene; grandmother, Collette Sosalla; brothers: Robert (Danielle) Sosalla, Brad Sosalla (Sheridan Fox), Shane (Michelle) Brady, Tytus McKinney; sisters: Denise (Neal) Schank and Melissa Laehn (Norm Pokorny II); father and mother in-law, Allan and Susan Lundberg; sisters and brothers in-law: Erica Lundberg (Graham Giese), Alyson (Matthew) Mackey and Sarah (Ryan) Compeau; as well as aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Darcy was preceded in death by his father, John Sosalla; his grandparents: Irene Sonsalla, Apolinary Sonsalla and Adolph Sosalla; his cousin, Dustin Sosalla; and his uncles: Randy Sonsalla and Eric Hagen.

Darcy’s family expresses immense gratitude to the ICU unit staff of Mayo Clinic Health System in La Crosse, for their exceptional care of Darcy during his time in the ICU. Your dedication, compassion and skill were evident every step of the way. Your unwavering commitment to ensure Darcy’s comfort and well-being, even in the face of such challenging circumstances, has left a lasting impression on our hearts. You were truly a blessing. Also, a warm and sincere thank you to St. Croix Hospice for their compassionate care during Darcy’s last day.

Darcy’s Note: “I want people to get scanned because early detection is key. I lost my battle, but we can win the war. I love you all and I will be riding the wind. This has been a crazy few days, but I have totally made the best of it spending time with all of you.”

Darcy requested a Celebration of Life to be held. It is scheduled for May 4, 2024, at the Blair Sportsmen’s Club.
