Everett L. Sluga
Everett L. Sluga, 92, of Independence, passed away unexpectedly, September 13, 2024, at his home.
Everett was born in rural Independence, March 31, 1932, to Lawrence and Helen (Lyga) Sluga. He was raised on the family farm where he learned a great work ethic. Everett was united in marriage to Valeria Bautch, October 20, 1953. The couple worked side-by-side on their Traverse Valley farm, turning it into a proud accomplishment for them both until retiring to their home in Independence in 2000.
Everett enjoyed reminiscing about the old days, playing cards, fishing and riding his motorcycle well into his 80s. He also enjoyed watching football and the old-time music shows on the local TV channel. Everett was an avid reader and looked forward to his daily newspaper. When it came to farm machinery, John Deere was his choice piece of equipment. Everett was a life-long member of Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church.
Everett is survived by his daughters: Sharon Sluga and Sandra (Alyn) Knudtson; grandchildren: William (Tracy Mackenburg) Sluga, Holly (Tim Kane) Knudtson, and Matthew (Amy) Sylvester-Knudtson; great-grandchildren: Quinn, Ezra and Harlow; sisters-in-law: Dorothy Koth and Jean Bautch; brother-in-law, Wayne Dirkman; and extended family and special friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Valeria in 2014; and an infant brother.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, September 19, 2024, at 10:30 a.m., at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church with Father George Thayilkuzhitottu officiating. Family and friends are welcome for visitation beginning at 9:00 a.m. at church with a public rosary being recited prior to mass. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
