Irene J. Thompson

 

Irene Joan Thompson, 88, of Blair, passed away peacefully, Saturday, June 21, 2025, at Gundersen Health System in La Crosse, with her family by her side.

Irene was born February 19, 1937, in Whitehall, to Martin and Goldie (Grandall) Halverson. She married Ronald E. Thompson, October 29, 1955, at Zion Lutheran Church in Blair. Ronald preceded Irene in death, April 1, 1972.

Irene attended grade school at Carpenter school through 8th grade, with high school years at Blair High.

Irene started her career in 1976 at Marty’s IGA (which later became Clipper’s IGA) in the produce department. She later moved into the deli department until her retirement in 2005. Irene was a great cook, and people loved her homemade soups, salads, hot dishes and desserts.

Irene spent many hours at her home also cooking and baking. She enjoyed sharing her homemade breads, candy and cookies with family, friends and neighbors, especially around Christmas time. She also enjoyed spending time in vegetable and flower gardens.

Irene is survived by five children: Bruce (Rosanne) Thompson of Osseo, Deborah (Steve) Tidquist of Blair, Susan Thompson of La Crosse, Dawn (John) Dubiel of Naples, TX, Todd Thompson of La Crosse and son-in-law, Frederick Flock of Westby; nine grandchildren: Hilary (Isaac) Walters, Haley (Josh) Nehring, Crystal (Tony) Seiler, Alicia (Nick) Stenberg, Chelsey (Brandon) Yeskie, Chad (Krystal) Ekern, Kristina (Mike) Hamilton, Sarah (Seth) Daffinson and Zachary Thompson; and 18 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, Irene was preceded in death by a daughter, Kim Thompson-Flock; a grandchild, Bradley Ekern; and five siblings: Myron, Melvin and Archie Halvorson, Gladys Martin and Mary Ann Halvorson.

Irene’s family would like to extend a special Thank You to the CCU and Palliative Care units at Gundersen Health System.

Funeral services will be held Monday, June 30, 2025, at 11:00 a.m., at Blair Lutheran Church West (Zion) with burial at Zion Lutheran Church, both in Blair. Pastor Terry Lorenz will officiate. Friends may call one hour hour prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Trempealeau County Humane Society or the Ladies Aid at Zion Church.
