John A. Huber

John Allen Huber, 84, of Melrose, passed away October 30, 2020, at the Wisconsin Veterans Home in King, Wis., to be reunited with his beloved wife, Millie.

John was born March 10, 1936, the son of John B. and Myrtle (Johnson) Huber. He began his working career at 16, working construction in Milwaukee. Two years later, his friends encouraged him to take a graduate exam and join the U.S. Army. He enlisted in 1954, and was assigned to serve in Korea. John was a loyal and proud veteran, and left as a senior rifleman in the 24th Infantry. He soon began working as a civil servant at Fort McCoy. John started as a supply specialist. He was an instructive leader, and retired 30 years later as a divisional supply chain manager. During his years of service, he received several awards and accolades from past commanders for efficiency and improvements.

John married Nancy Gabriel and had one son, James. He remarried Mildred (Young/Isensee) in 1972, and began a 43-year partnership.

John retired from civil service in 1989, and began traveling in his RV with Millie and friends, including a trip to Alaska. John never lost his love of the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing.

During his working years, he became a self-taught auto mechanic and small engine repairman. His garage was constantly updated with tools and equipment and was very helpful to neighbors and friends. He and Millie loved the community, and elected to lease a small parcel of land for the North Bend Lions Club facilities, which are thriving today. He was a member of the local Ducks Unlimited chapter, became president of the Lions Club and served as a church deacon.

John decided to become active again in the workforce by taking a seasonal position with Galesville Co-Op. He worked there for several years, and left to provide healthcare for his wife, Millie, in 2014. He loved the Green Bay Packers, Wisconsin Badgers and baseball.

John succumbed to death after a valiant fight with a traumatic fall/injury. He was fiercely independent, opinionated and an avid hunter until his injury. Being extremely proud of what he accomplished, he believed in setting your mind to it and then doing it.

John was preceded in death by his parents; and wife.

John is survived by his son, James of Ettrick; step-sons, Glenn Isensee of Minocqua; Brent Isensee of Portage; Larry Isensee of Sparta; Wallace Isensee of Fond du Lac; and their families.

At this time, a private family service will be held. A Celebration of Life event is being planned for Spring of 2021, at the North Bend Lions facility (COVID dependent).

Special thanks to the Spinal Cord Trauma Unit at the Milwaukee V.A. Medical Center and Wisconsin Veterans Home in King, Wis.
