Louis A. H. Salzwedel

 

Louis A. H. Salzwedel, 80, of Ettrick, died Tuesday, April 21, 2020, at U.W. Hospital in Madison, as a result of injuries he received in a tragic fire.

Louis was born November 22, 1939, in La Crosse, to Louis H. and Alice (Thompson) Salzwedel. He married Judith Lindow in Black River Falls, June 17, 1961.

Louis worked for Twesme Feed Mill, hauled milk for Arcadia Creamery and farmed his homestead. He was a life-long member of South Beaver Creek Lutheran Church, and held leadership positions on the church council and the men’s club. Louis also served on the LaCrosse Area Synod Council (ELCA) with Bishop April Larson.

Louis looked forward to deer hunting season and trout planting day as a member of the Ettrick Rod and Gun Club. He served as the clerk for Midwest Livestock in Ettrick and then at Equity Market in Sparta. For many years, his Saturday mornings were spent monitoring the Ettrick township’s recycling center until COVID-19 precautions went into effect. He loved music, especially Old-Time music, rolled a mean bowling ball and, always carried cards in his pocket, looking for anyone with whom to play a game of euchre.

He was preceded in death by his parents; infant twin siblings: Louis and Lois; sisters: Ruth Everson and Lois McDougall; and a nephew, Donald McDougall.

Louis is survived by his wife, Judy; a daughter, Lynnae (Steven) Schatz; two sons: Jeffrey and Loren (Keri Jo); along with four grandchildren: Hannah (Joshua) Macon, Kyle Salzwedel, Nathaniel Schatz and Nicholas Salzwedel; a sister, Anna Marie Brudos; brothers-in-law: Russell McDougall, Richard (Ardel) Lindow and Creswell (Ann) Lindow, Jr.; sisters-in-law: Shirley Johnson and Carol (Gary) Gunderson; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Louis, a/k/a Louie, Lou or Sonny, was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend to everyone.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, a private service was held Saturday, April 25, 2020. Rev. John Ashland officiated. Family and friends were invited to honor Louis, Saturday, April 25, 2020, from 2:00 pm. to 3:00 p.m., in a drive-through procession through South Beaver Creek Lutheran Cemetery, W16679 Co. Rd. D, Ettrick, 

A memorial service celebrating Louis’s life will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Gale-Ettrick First Responders, Ettrick Fire Department or the South Beaver Creek Lutheran Church.
