Mavis L. Langton

Mavis Lucille Langton, 86, passed away, surrounded by family, August 11, 2022, at the Marshfield Medical Center.

Mavis was the youngest of five sisters, born October 12, 1935, in Shawano, to John and Edith Lehrke. She grew up on the family farm near Whitehall. Mavis attended a single room rural grade school and graduated Whitehall High School in 1954. Following high school, Mavis shared an apartment with her sister, Doris, and good friend, Eleanor Suchla. She worked in Whitehall for the County Nurses Office and then served as the Deputy Clerk of Court. That is where she met John Langton and they married, March 16, 1968, at St John the Apostle Catholic Church in Whitehall. Mavis and John then moved to Baldwin, where their children were born and then settled in Neillsville in 1975. After many years dedicated to raising her family, she began working at Figi’s in Neillsville, where the highlight of her day was enjoying good conversation with friends.

Mavis was an extremely caring and loyal sister, wife, mother and grandma. She enjoyed the simple things of life, in particular, gardening, cooking, following the Brewers, camping, watching the Wheel of Fortune (of which she could have easily been a contestant!) and volunteering for activities such as the Neillsville Bloodmobile and the Clark County Human Society. She loved a great cup of coffee in the morning and a glass (or two!) of wine in the evening. She was very fond of the furry friends in her life that included a number of dogs and cats and an occasional ‘Rockie’ (raccoon) on the deck. Her grandchildren loved her baking, in particular her famous chocolate chip cookies, a recipe that seems only reproducible by Grandma. She enjoyed making Easter and Christmas breads and sharing them with neighbors and friends.

Mavis is survived by her husband of 54 years, John; two children: Steve (Holly) Langton of Evansville, Amy (Jody) Kolano of Portage. She is further survived by her grandchildren: Bailey Langton, Sydney Langton, Nicole Kolano, Molly Kolano; and her nieces and nephews.

Mavis was preceded in death by her parents, John and Edith Lehrke; and her sisters: Helen Hermann, Mabel Hermann, Josephine Gauthier and Doris Lawrence.
